The Dartmouth Trust - Trustee Vacancy The Dartmouth Trust

Dartmouth is a town with a rich history. The natural harbour meant that the town was at the forefront of global exploration and trade which brought prosperity. The town continues to benefit from this historic prosperity through substantial charitable endowments made by local people.

The Dartmouth Trust was established to manage many of these charitable

endowments. The Dartmouth Trust’s purpose is to maximise income from its endowments, such income being divided amongst 3 local charities (Dartmouth United Charities, The Ecclesiastical Share of The Dartmouth Trust and The Public Purposes Share of The Dartmouth Trust). These 3 charities, with their separate trustee boards, provide public benefit to the town and local people. Benefits include almshouse accommodation provision, financial support for Dartmouth Caring, repairs to churches and other historic buildings e.g. St Saviours and The Butterwalk.

The Dartmouth Trust is currently recruiting a trustee to help manage its

investments for the long term benefit of the above charities. Investments comprise property - with commercial property being the largest element - and investment funds. Trustees are responsible for leading the strategic direction of the charity and ensuring that it works effectively and in accordance with its legal constitution.

Skills that the current trustees would welcome include experience of managing

investments and property or related legal matters. Local knowledge is important as is a commitment to the role. A blend of local knowledge and skill would be ideal. In recent months trustees have been in negotiations with prospective retailers for vacant premises, have appointed contractors to strip out a building and agreed terms of a new lease with a major retailer. This process was conducted at lightning speed to maximise income from the trust’s assets.

The role of a trustee is voluntary. Meetings of the board are held quarterly and

trustees are involved with other matters throughout the year by email or committee. If you have relevant skills and the time and energy to devote to the charity please

email info@dartmouthtrust.org.uk or phone 01803 835006 for an informal discussion with the Chair/Vice-chair of trustees.
