38 Classic antiques A

s an auctioneer it is always satisfying to know that in an ever changing

market, the demand for classic antiques remains strong. Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood’s recent two day Fine Art sale confirmed that the demand for high quality English porcelain and paintings continues to be top of the market. The large 17th century oil on canvas portrait of a reclining nude from the Studio of Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680) was always going to catch the eye. However, it raised more than a few eyebrows on the first day of the sale when it eventually sold for £62,000. The age and provenance no doubt helping it to achieve such a good price. An oil on canvas of the entrance to the River Dart by Thomas Luny (1759-1837) attracted local interest, selling for £2,700, while another similar scene of Polruan, Fowey by Arthur Wilde Parsons ( 1854-1931) sold for £1,800. sale when it sold for £19,000; the colour of the sapphire being the main reason for such competitive bidding. The high hammer prices continued on the second day with some of the rarest and most sought after pieces of Flight & Barr Worcester porcelain from the collection of the late Derek O’Donoghue. The combination of the rare orange colour ground and the shell and seaweed decorated panels meant that the small 14.5cm high triple cylinder vase obliterated its pre-sale estimate, even with some minor

wear to the gilding of the rims, to sell for £17,000. A similar vase with feather decoration with a small restored chip to the footrim also sold for £15,000. The remainder of the collection which included rare marbled ground pieces also sold well. In a market that has been predominantly led by the demand for Chinese and Oriental porcelain, these results indicate that there is still a future market for English porcelain. •
