There’s Culture! Free range Women ventured as far as paignton last month for a nail biting round of pirate crazy golf.

It is hard to understand how drivers can ignore the signs - Maximum Width 6’6’’ and Number of vans stuck this year – 3 but one of the vans was driven by two polish guys who couldn’t read english. Never thought of that did we! We will have to come up with a visual sign, which does not depend upon reading. The two unfortunate poles were stuck in their cab – actually wedged there by the walls either side of the van – for many hours. Kind neighbours took out cups of tea for them but escape was impossible until a towing vehicle dragged the van bodily backwards and up the lane. blow me but another van was stuck just days later. It’s like a farce in Wood Lane but you’d need a sense of humour to appreciate it.

sadly Johnny Depp wasn’t on hand to shout encouragement but coffee and cake was freely available so it was time very well spent. There was also a visit to Princess Theatre to see a performance of Dirty Dancing and a pre theatre supper at bistro

Pierre. Free range Women has a social event every month and if you would like to join in and have your details on the database just email jan_cattell@yahoo.co.uk

Vans Stuck ... Again! Wood Lane struck last month, or to be more accurate vans have continued to get stuck, and I do mean stuck.

America’s Cup comes

to Kingswear The ever popular Junior sailing Week began on monday 24th July at the royal Dart Yacht Club and there were boat loads of

youngsters keen to get out and play on the water. With over 40 boats and 48 children, the Club, pontoon and water became awash with bright sails and smiling faces and this year the event started with a blast with some challenging and strong winds. On the second day the club welcomed back its most famous junior sailor of yesteryear – Nick Hutton - crew member of this year’s Land rover bAr America’s Cup team. He was quick to get out on the water and show the children what he knew, helping out in the safety boat, righting several capsized dinghies and it was clear he enjoyed being back on home waters.

There was no America’s Cup to fight for but the hallowed river Dart Cup was won by Lucas bennett.

The event is run by rDYC’s stalwart band of volunteer rYA instructors. They are ably assisted by 12 teenage assistant instructors – who have all been trained at the club in the saturday morning Junior sailing programme and who are willing and keen to return and pass on their skills to the younger members.

The week is all about fun, meeting new people, inspiration and building confidence. “It’s not about qualifications, it’s all about whetting the appetite… and perhaps learning some new skills for life” Suzanne Huddart
