POSTCARD from Leonie

Looking down on Zakinthos Town from the fort

AFTER eight months sailing around the Ionian Sea it is clear why this is the most popular yacht charter destination in Greece. The area is gentle day sailing at its best and is awash with picturesque harbours and anchorages polished to perfection under clear blue sunny skies. The scenic islands consist of Corfu, paxos and Anti-

paxos in the north Ionian, and the seven islands of Lefkas, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Ithaca, meganissi, Kastos and Kalamos which form the Inland Ionian. each island has its own distinct character. The

sickle-shaped island of Corfu lying just off the mainland coasts of Greece and Albania has three times the rainfall of the islands in the central Aegean which makes it a verdant green place. There are a number of anchorages in the less touristy northern end of the island, including the beautiful Kouloura bay, and some good beaches. Corfu Town is the largest and most attractive main

town in the Ionian Islands, specially the old quarter where a warren of alleys run between the Italianate

houses. paxos, south of Corfu, is probably my favourite

island, with its crystal clear waters and verdant and hilly interior full of cultivated olive groves. Lakka bay is stunning, its clear turquoise water attracting a myriad of yachts in high season. The lively, buzzing main town of Gaios can be chaos in the summer with sailors churning up the water and tangling anchors as they frantically try to find space to tie up along the harbour wall. Nearby Anti-paxos boasts wonderful sandy beaches

(which paxos doesn’t have) and lovely clear water. There are two popular bays on the north east side of the island which make great day anchorages.
