105 Life’s a beach

Digging in the sand and splashing about in rockpools, searching for fish, crabs and crustaceans is an essential childhood experience and there’s no better place to do it than along the South Devon coastline. In a recent article on rockpool hot spots in the UK, Wembury, near Plymouth topped the list and it’s also the favourite of wildlife loving ex- Goodie, Bill Oddie. See www.bythedart.co.uk, www.mcsuk.org or

www.southdevonaonb.org.uk for more infomation about local beaches and upcoming events .

Follow the Seashore Code this summer

Download Devon Wildlife Trust’s “Love the beach leaf- let” at www.devonwildlifetrust.org with its guide on what to spot in our local rockpools: anemone, blennie, shore crab, limpet and the common mussel & prawn.

THE SEASHORE CODE ● HANDLE ME WITH CARE – poking or squeezing soft-body animals like sea anemones can harm them.

● DON’T MAKE ME HOMELESS – make sure a shell is empty if taking it home.

● I DON’T LIKE LITTER – take your rubbish home – litter is a killer for wildlife.

● PUT ME BACK – Always replace animals, rocks and seaweed where you found them. Don’t leave animals in buckets.

● WATCH WHERE YOU WALK - be careful not to dislodge or crush small sea creatures. Don’t force animals like limpets off the rocks

• Look after yourself – Check the tide and keep away from the cliffs.
