Reader Research I
f you’re an advertiser in by The Dart, you may be interested in the following results from our recent reader research. Readers have responded enthusiastically to the magazine and there was
a great response to the survey. It would appear that, after nearly 10 years, By The Dart magazine continues to be held in high esteem by local residents.
We asked readers to score our efforts out of 10 (as an interesting and useful community magazine). Over half of all readers - 54% - said 10 out of 10! And 77% , nearly 4 out of 5 readers score the magazine at least 9 out of 10 or better.
producing this magazine entails much hard work so such a positive response from readers is really appreciated. After nearly 40 years in magazine publishing, I have seen very few magazines score so highly. We summarise the key findings below – if you’d like more details about these results and what they could mean for your business and how you promote it, then give us a call;
■ 75% of readers read every issue.
■ 35% read it in one sitting but the majority dip in and out of it.
■ Less than 1 in 5 copies go straight into recycling once read – instead, over 50% are kept for up to a year or more (and nearly 10% of all readers still have most copies we have ever published!). As important, more than 1 in 4 copies are passed on to family and friends widening the circle of readership even further.
■ Most readers regularly read most of the magazine. As you’d expect, information about what’s on locally, The Flavel and festivals and regattas is widely read (approx 75% read these sections regularly).
■ Residents are equally keen on reading about local people and local history and photographic features that show off Dartmouth and the local area at its best are just as popular.
■ Readers love their food & drink, which has proved one of our most popular regular features. Unsurprisingly, our series of local walks are keenly read so readers are probably fitter than most!

■ Local property for sale is and probably always will be of great interest to many and so it is proved with over two thirds of readers regularly reading these pages.
■ As you’d expect, what happens on the river etc is important – 60% regularly read about the Dart Harbour and 3 out of 4 readers consult our tide tables.
■ 95% of readers read our features about local businesses (half doing so regularly). Conclusion - if your business has something to say, let us know so your customers hear about it.
■ moreover, only 1 respondent admits to never looking at the adverts in the magazine! Instead, nearly 40% say they look at most adverts, 60% at some of the adverts. And, importantly 93% of readers refer back to by The Dart for information about local businesses & services such as contact numbers etc – perhaps one of the reasons why most readers keep the magazine long after it’s published. Which is a relief, of course, as without
readers responding to adverts, by The Dart would not exist. It does underline the importance of hyper local publications in providing the most direct route to local customers for local businesses.
■ 50% of readers visit our website – the website is now Dartmouth’s most visited information site and certainly the biggest. The majority of visits to the site are from those outside of Dartmouth but the site is increasingly a vital source of local information for local residents. Over time, we expect and plan for local traffic to grow. For advertisers, therefore, we now offer marketing solutions across multiple platforms, including social media, that reinforce and extend what we can do in the magazine. Call or email us for more information.
■ We also asked readers what more or less they would like in the magazine. This has proved really useful. Whilst most readers said they liked it just as it is, we did get some constructive suggestions, mostly about new features, which we will implement in coming months.
Finally and as mentioned in Dart Notes (page 6), the winner of the research prize draw for a £100 rockfish Dartmouth voucher was Jenny Tolman of Dartmouth
