117 NOT IN TOWN BUT NEW

TO THE AREA We draw your attention to some new businesses that have recently started in the area – Gemstone Decorators (page 139) offers a new and high quality decorating service. If you love Farrow & ball colours then you’ll love Gemstone … Long-term by The Dart contributor Heather betts has changed direction this year with her business Dartmouth Computing. she now offers local small businesses e.g. accommodation provid- ers, builders, hairdressers etc a ‘profes- sional, affordable and easy to manage website building service’ – see page 118 for details. In our July issue, we featured a new yacht charter business – Your Escape – see their advert on page 127 of this issue for details. The Banquet Boat (advert page 44 and our six river Trips feature on page 45) was also featured last month and by all accounts this has resulted in much interest in this new service on the River Dart. If you own a holiday home, a new property management company - Pure - has set up in South Hams - see page 140.

THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN’ We’ve put a lot of effort in building our website – www. bythedart.co.uk - into Dartmouth’s biggest and, now most visited, information website. Consequently we spend a lot of time analysing the traffic to the site to be sure our efforts have been worthwhile. Thankfully, we’ve seen a near 50% increase in visits in the past year (running at a rate of 250k – 300k annually) but what has been really interesting is the technology that visitors use to access the site. A year ago just under 50% of visitors would access the site using their desktop PC; approx 30% by use of a smart phone and 25% via a tablet/iPad etc. A year later; there is now a small majority using their phone (60% of which is an iPhone) rather than a PC to view the site. The proportion using a tablet remains unchanged. We expect the proportion of visits by phone will keep on increasing. Of course, many will use such a site whilst out and about (we get alot of phone calls from visitors in the town asking varied and obscure questions about the town and local businesses) but many are clearly sitting at home/in their office etc in all sorts of places across the UK. Conclusion and lessons for all businesses, especially those that are significantly dependent on visitors? – if your website isn’t fully mobile compliant then your business is potentially at a significant competitive disadvantage.
