Totnes Orange Race On Tuesday August 22nd


the Elizabethan town of Totnes


will stop to honour the annual tradition of chasing oranges down the high street. With different races of varying gradients for young and old this attracts large crowds of spectators. The races involve the contestants hurling an orange down the street and then racing after it, the winner being the one across the finish line first with a recognisable piece of fruit. The origins of the races are unclear but legend has it that Sir Francis Drake dropped his basket of oranges on Fore Street and the locals chased them down the slope. The races kick off from the Market Square at 11am and coincide with the town’s Elizabethan Market, with plenty of goods and entertainment on offer.

For interesting, educational and free beach activities the Slapton Ley trailer is back everyday of the summer holiday, from 11am to 4pm. Parked up in the memorial car park the trailer is home to lots of fun ideas and enthusiastic staff. Among the many activities on offer are scavenger hunts; orienteering; kite making; and mosaic art, using the spectacular backdrop of the beach and Ley nature reserve as inspiration. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
