Solihull Solihull Chamber Patrons

Here come the girls

Two Solihull schools have been doing their best to encourage their female pupils to think about taking up a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). Girls from Arden School have been on a work

experience programme with car giant Jaguar Land Rover, youngsters from Balsall Common Primary travelled to the Banbury premises of motorsport and technology business Prodrive. JLR offered the week-long work experience opportunity to encourage young girls to consider engineering as a career. Arden students in Year 9 set to task applying

and of the 20 places on offer, Arden won ten places, significantly more than any other school in Solihull. It seems that the programme worked, as the school that many of the girls were now far more interested in careers in engineering. Among those taking were Liz Cornforth, Zoe

Wilkinson and Rosalie Carter. Liz said: “My week of work experience was incredible. It was a week full of learning, problem solving and making new friends. I would recommend more women joining engineering because females are just as capable.”

Zoe said: “Jaguar Landrover was an invaluable opportunity to learn about manufacturing process. It gave an insight into the applications of ‘real world’ engineering and the new technologies involved, making it an incredibly interesting experience.”

‘This was a wonderful opportunity to raise the aspirations of our students’

And Rosalie said of her experience: “I really

enjoyed the work experience week at Jaguar Land Rover. It taught me lots about what goes on behind the scenes in factories and on production lines and gave me an insight into what working life is like.” Arden Academy principal Martin Murphy said:

“This was a wonderful opportunity to raise the aspirations of our students and we would like to thank JLR for this experience. We very much value working with businesses and in this case one of the leading businesses in the UK.”

Helping youngsters

to build up resilience A Digbeth-based organisation which helps schools and others tackle extremism has condemned the recent terrorist attacks in London and Manchester. The organisation is ConnectFutures,

which deliver training to schools, colleges, organisations and young people to build resilience to extremism and exploitation for a safer society. ConnectFutures director Zubeda Limbada

said: “All members of our communities and organisations need to feel protected and safe. For that to happen at a practical level, preventative approaches that address and tackle radicalisation – both Islamist and Far Right – are a crucial measure. “At ConnectFutures we believe that

longer term, systematic measures to educate against extremism remain vital, including a massive push on critical thinking and understanding the ways in which extremist groups groom and radicalise people.”
