International Trade International Midlands Engine roars into life

A Government initiative which is helping to drive up growth and productivity in the Midlands has announced a major programme of overseas trade visits. The initiative is Midlands Engine, which is

arranging market visits to five major trade events in 2017/18, spanning a wide range of sectors. The first of these is NY Now 2017, which is one of the world’s leading lifestyle trade shows, and is firmly aimed at the retail and consumer goods market. NY Now takes place on 19-23 August, and is,

of course, being hosted in New York. The show attracts more than 25,000 visitors, from the US and abroad. NY Now will be followed by Anuga 2017, one of the world’s largest and most important trade fairs for food and drink. This will take place in Cologne, Germany, this

autumn, between 7-11 October. This fair attracts around 160,000 visitors and some 7,000 exhibitors, including key players from the world’s food and beverages industry. Anuga will be followed a month later by the

China International Industry Fair (CIIF), which takes place in Shanghai between 7-11 November. This event has been growing steadily for the past 11 years, and focuses on industrial products,

including metal cutting and forming machines, and all kinds of tooling equipment. At the start of 2018, the focus will then switch

to the Middle East and Dubai, which will be hosting the Arab Health Exhibition and Congress, the second largest healthcare exhibition in the world. The exhibition, between 29 January–1 February, will focus on medical products of all kinds. The fifth visit is to Auto Expo Components

2018, which takes place in Delhi, India, between 8-11 February. The show is being organised by the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India, and will focus on automotive components, technology and services. Midlands Engine is encouraging local firms to

join the market visit programme, which is focused on key Midland target markets and sectors. Cheryl Boxall, international trade adviser at Chamber, said: “There has never been a better time to explore opportunities in new overseas markets in Europe and beyond. “Midlands Engine is the facilitator of this

exciting programme, covering a range of sectors, including consumer goods, food and drink, healthcare, automotive and engineering. All of these are key sectors for Greater Birmingham.”

Major conference comes to Birmingham

Commerce and supported by Birmingham Chamber, is taking place on 12 October at the Vox Centre. Last year’s event took place in London in

City links with Nuremberg

A city which is known as the ‘industrial heart’ of Bavaria is set to build stronger ties with Birmingham’s business community. The city is Nuremberg, which is home to

industrial giants Siemens and MAN. Officials from the city are visiting Birmingham on a business exchange mission on 13 September, which will be hosted by the city’s airport. The visit coincides with the launch of new air

links between Birmingham and Nuremberg, which are being operated by BMI Regional. The new route began in May, and operates six times a week. Nuremberg is one of Germany’s largest

business centres, and some 25,000 companies are based there. The city has the fourth largest

share of Germany’s manufacturing sector, behind Wuppertal, Duisburg, Bremen and Bielefeld. It is second only to Munich, in terms of its

share of the German information and communication technology (ICT). The city is home to a population of 530,000,

of which 372,500 are said to be ‘gainfully employed’, and its gross domestic product (based on 2014) is 26 billion euros, or approximately £23 billion. Those taking part in the business exchange

will include Dr Michael Fraas, Nuremberg’s deputy mayor for economic affairs, Marco von Dobschutz-Dietl, who is the city’s head of international economic affairs.

November and was aimed at giving delegates the practical advice, resources and contacts needed to grow their businesses, and begin the next step of their export journey. This year’s conference will follow a similar

formula, and will include sessions on every aspect of the export process that will help businesses explore new opportunities, as well as panel debates and keynote speeches from successful exporters and business leaders. Chamber chief executive Paul Faulkner

said: “This will be a fantastic opportunity for members to engage in trade discussion with Government and business representatives. It will be an opportunity for delegates to network with follow exports and to access new trade opportunities.”
