Taking a bite out of Cologne
Midland-based food and drink producers who are looking to enter the German market are being encouraged to take part in a trade mission to a major show in Cologne. The show is Anuga, which takes place in
Cologne from 7-11 October. Anuga is a destination for a major market visit
by Midlands Engine (see page 28), but in addition Enterprise Europe Network hopes to use it to introduce local suppliers to the German market. The event will focus on face-to-face buyer-
producer meetings based on specific requests from the German buyers. Midlands’ producers will be among those from all over Europe who will travel to Cologne to present their products during the pre-booked meetings. Sunny Claire, business advisor, Enterprise Europe Network, said: “Around 82 million

Roam like you’re at home
Phone calls throughout Europe will be cheaper from now on thanks to an initiative by the European Commission (EC). The EC is forcing mobile phone operators to
cap phone, text and mobile internet charges and the new regime will see users paying what they would if they were at home for all of these things. The new system has been named ‘Roam Like
at Home’ and could potentially save users a huge amount of money when they are travelling around Europe using their mobile phone. The EC said: “The minutes of calls, SMS and
megabytes of data that a person consumes abroad within the EU will be charged the same as at home. People will not have bill shocks anymore.” In addition, if a person has unlimited calls and
text message, he/she will get this when roaming in the EU. However, if a person has unlimited mobile/cheap mobile data at home, his operator may apply a safeguard (fair use) limit on data use while roaming. If so, the operator will have to inform the customer in advance about such a limit. Amardeep Mangat, of Birmingham-based
Europe Direct, said: “Thanks to the efforts of the Commission, business travellers and others will now find that they are enjoying much reduced mobile phone charges while travelling in Europe.”
