Business News Mayor mentors young people
Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce are backing Andy Street’s ‘Mayor’s Mentor’ scheme. The West Midlands mayor has launched the scheme to
help guide young people out of unemployment. Mr Street is looking for people who have been
successful in their careers to offer guidance to those who are struggling to get started or looking for a new direction. It is a key part of his pledge to wipe out youth
unemployment in the West Midlands by the time his term of office ends in 2020. And GBCC are lending its support by encouraging member businesses to participate.
Director of policy and strategic relationships
Henrietta Brealey said: “We are delighted to be supporting Mayor’s Mentors and would actively encourage Chamber members to get involved too. “You might not realise it, but your knowledge and
networks could be invaluable to someone looking to take their first step into your industry, set up a business or even just figure out what their aspirations are.”

James’ hobby is hot property
A 57-year-old former accountant has proved that it is never too late to chase your dream career, after turning his hobby as a property developer into a successful West Midlands-based business. James Clayton, who originally
trained as an accountant, became financial director of a white goods company and then co-founded an electrical waste recycling company before giving it all up to go into business with his wife. Mr Clayton said: “My wife and I
had been buying properties to live in, redevelop and sell since we were young and it was a hobby we both loved.
“With her experience as an
estate agent and mine of running a company, we found ourselves with both the financial knowhow and property knowledge to upscale our hobby and turn it into a business – so we launched Tree Tops Homes.” Its rapid growth has been put
down to the Government’s ‘help-to- buy’ scheme, which, according to Mr Clayton, has helped the market dramatically and kept it buoyant during financially difficult times such as the recession and Brexit. Tree Tops Homes will be creating
16 high-quality new-builds in sought-after locations across the Midlands this year, said Mr Clayton.
