Exciting season announced
The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra has announced its 2017-18 concert season, the second under music director Mirga Gražinyte-Tyla. The season opens on 21
September with a performance of Haydn’s masterpiece The Creation, an oratorio which depicts the creation of the world, as described in the book of Genesis. This will be beginning of an
exciting season which will see Mirga will conduct 26 concerts, including a major festival next March 2018 to celebrate Claude Debussy, 100 years after his death, and a concert performance of his fairytale opera Pelléas et Mélisande, featuring an outstanding international cast. Also appearing will be artist
in residence Jörg Widmann, who the CBSO describes as ‘maverick composer, dynamic conductor and clarinettist extraordinaire’ and a host of other performers. Conductors and soloists
during the season will include: Edward Gardner, Michael Seal, John Wilson, Nicholas Collon, Rudolf Buchbinder and Nicola Benedetti.
National Lottery winners from across the UK and a war hero awarded the George Cross for gallantry teamed up to build a special pathway at The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. The lucky lotto winners spent
two days creating ‘The National Lottery Way’, a 40-metre walkway that will help visitors reach the memorials. This is the third time lottery
winners have volunteered at The Arboretum and on this occasion, they were joined by Matthew Croucher, a 33-year-old Royal Marine Commando from Solihull who risked his life to save his comrades in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, by throwing himself on a Taliban tripwire grenade. One of the lotto winners was Ken
Wedgeworth, who is a volunteer worker at the Arboretum and also an ex-British Army Sergeant Major of 35 years. In late 2016 he won £1 million on EuroMillions. The National Lottery Way is a
pathway that links the main avenue to the rear of the site where many new memorials are located. The new route will encourage more people to explore this area and

make it easier for them to get there. The lotto winners, together with
Matthew and Camelot staff, spent 48 hours excavating the route, pouring gravel, planting trees and shrubs and placing signage. The honour of officially opening
the route went to Matthew and Lottery winner Ken who were
surrounded by other winners and veterans of the Women’s Royal Army Corps Association. Matthew said: “I assumed we’d
get a somewhat chilled group of wealthy people. What I saw was a very hard-working group who wanted to make a difference. Indeed, they worked so hard some of them completed other tasks because it was all finished so quickly. They all mentioned how they wanted to give something back after their good fortune and not only did they work hard but they were great fun with an amazing sense of humour.”

Environmentally-conscious Brummies have pledged to reduce their use of single-use plastic bottles as part of World Ocean’s Day activity in Birmingham. At a pop-up photo booth in the
Bullring, the seventh annual Project Ocean saw 340 people sign up to stop buying single-use plastic water bottles, as well as collecting more than 163 plastic bottles. Customers and passers-by were
also able to find out about Project Ocean, which aims to inspire businesses, organisations and individuals to adopt a more responsible mindset towards their

use of throwaway plastics, and were invited to recycle their environmentally damaging plastic water bottles. Anyone who signed the pledge
was given a voucher for ten per cent off any reusable water bottle sold in Selfridges, which launched Project Ocean with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) in 2011. Sam Watts, general manager of
Selfridges Birmingham, said: “We are committed to being more green and sustainable across the store and am so pleased to see that so many people share our passion to reduce their use of single-use plastics.”
