an example to your partner in the ways in which you follow your intuition, and your partner will see that it can be trusted. If a partner is not on board, have patience and compassion. That person is with you after all, so chances are high that if you behave in a loving manner toward your partner while trusting your sixth sense, your partner will soften rather than fight you over this. Above all maintain a sense of humor and the energy between you will even out. Don’t be condescending or act superior toward your partner. Simply say, “I listen to my intuition because I trust it to be a reliable source of guidance for me. It’s not personal.”

DORY: In light of the current troubles in the world – war, economic instability, natural disasters – do you see a greater need for the use of our own intuition?

SONIA CHOQUETTE: I see we have a great need for intuition in every situation, and not just because it can protect and warn us of upcoming natural disasters, and even terrorists threats. Intuition serves to warn, protect, guide us, direct, and connect. It is the inborn sense that shows us how to make the right decisions and steer away from the wrong ones. Without it, we are at a great disadvantage in life, much like being in the middle of the woods at night, without a flashlight. Intuition is our inner light. It informs us far better than the more limited five physical senses alone can. Like everything in nature, this inner radar gives us clear direction, and the more we pay attention to it, the more our lives get into the flow.

DORY: I remember that on every New Year’s Eve, you would work on your own Heart’s Desire box. I was wondering if that was still a practice of yours or if you do something else personally to manifest your dreams?

SONIA CHOQUETTE: Intuition partners best with intention and when the two work together you are led directly to your heart’s desire. This is why every year for as long as I can remember, I, along with my family, have made alchemy, or intention boxes on New Years Eve.

To do this we set our intention and turn it into a work of art, discussing our goals and desires as we paint, paste, glue, glitter, and design our alchemy boxes, slathered with our intentions for the year ahead all over them. Each year, before we make a new one, we look at the one we made the previous year and marvel at how our intentions, in fact, did come to pass, and often better than our wildest dreams would have imagined.

I highly recommend this ritual, outlined in my book Your Heart’s Desire: Creating the Life You Really Want, to do alone, or share with friends, and family. The more the merrier. It works.

DORY: What daily intuitive practices do you have that you can share with our readers? If you could choose just one thing, what would you advise for others venturing into their intuitive life or for someone more advanced in maintaining health or staying grounded?

SONIA CHOQUETTE: Every morning, I spend twenty to thirty minutes doing yoga, and then ten to fifteen minutes meditating afterward. Then I set my intentions for the day, say them out loud, take a deep breath, and release the sound “Ahh” to open my heart and spirit to guidance to achieve my goals this day. This ritual keeps me grounded, centered, and focused on what is important while filtering out what isn’t, such as fearful mind chatter.

I recommend daily movement, such as yoga or walking, as well as breathing deeply, expressing gratitude, setting intention, and, of course, laughing a lot.

All these things strengthen intuition, while reducing fear and stress.

Most of all, be mindful of the choices you are making. Do they support your spirit or harm your spirit? Whether it is watching too much TV, or sitting down too much, or not moving, or eating a poor diet, or asking others instead of your inner voice for input; it’s these small choices that make the big difference in the quality of your intuition and the quality of your life. Choose to support your spirit with love and everything else works out.
