News INTERNATIONAL UPDATE Vannes licence drives closer

French city of Vannes prepares the way to open its SBEC casino in time for Christmas 2015

Vannes Mayor David Robo has now officially signed the delegation of public service with Société Bretonne d’Exploitation de Casinos (SBEC) paving the way for the future €10 m Vannes casino to open for Christmas in 2015.

The licence for Vannes, located in Brittany in north-western France, still needs approval from Ministry of the Interior but all the signs are that it will be developed in the grounds of Parc du Golfe, at the l’hôtel Mercure, in the old harbour station by licence winner SBEC. The operator will pay the city €40,000 in rent each year along with and €700,000 to 800,000 fee. Corbillé Hugo, President of the SBEC, said: We do not know whether the procedure for obtaining approval will be easy or not. Since the arrival of the new government, no new casino has filed a folder. We have heard that the state is not in favour of creating any new casinos. The Vannes Casino will create 60 to 80 jobs whilst half of our revenue will go into the state coffers. This is not an insignificant amount.”

The new casino will be competing with another casino in the SBEC portfolio as the licence in Quiberon is only 50km away. “I'm all for competition,” Mr. Hugo

Rank draws circle

with Blue Square Rank Group could be about to sell its online sports betting business Blue Square as it looks to concentrate on its casinos and bingo brands. It said Blue Square, which offers sports betting, an online casino and online slots games, as well as providing sports betting for 888, continued to make a loss and that it would 'review' the business. “The business operates solely in the digital channel of the highly competitive sports betting market where it continues to generate an operating loss,” Rank said in a statement. Rank revealed that Blue Square revenue had increased by 19 per cent back in October but that profitability would be stunted by the cost of a £2m promotional campaign. Despite its 100,000 customers, Blue Square is relatively small compared to Ladbrokes, William Hill and Paddy Power.

added. “It creates dynamism.” With an increase in GGR of 7.69 per cent, the mayor said that SBEC was the ‘only casino group that grew between October 2011 and October 2012’

DAVID ROBO,

Mayor, Vannes, France.

“We are confident the licence will

receive the green light from the Ministry of the

Interior despite the fact that it will,

inevitably, have an impact on casinos in Morbihan and Loire-Atlantique.

The future €10m Vannes casino will sit on stilts with parking for 170 cars at ground level and a casino, restaurant and theatre above. The permanent casino and restaurant will be open all year and will create sixty jobs, generating tax for the local council of €1.2m per year with 80,000 visitors expected in the first year.

SBEC, which already operates 16 gaming floors with various partners, including those in Saint-Quay-Portrieux, Quiberon and soon Larmor-Plage, will operate the new casino for 20 years after which time the casino will become the property of the town of Vannes. It is hoping to open a temporary casino in March 2014.
