MOVERS & SHAKERS Andrew Weil FOUNDER, WEIL LIFESTYLE LLC
While wellness – the combining of spa therapies and facilities, mainstream and complementary medicine, nutrition and fi tness – and a healthy approach to ageing has captured the imagination of our industry globally over the past few years, Weil has dedicated his lifelong career to it. As a world-renowned leader and pioneer in the fi eld of integrative medicine, he’s played a great role in popularising it.
W
eil has always practised natural and preventative medicine and also has a medical degree and an undergraduate degree in biology
(botany) from Harvard University. His view is that mainstream and alterna-
tive medicine are complementary approaches and specifi cally that mainstream medicine is well suited to treating diseases, while alter- native medicine can help to prevent ailments and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Stress reduc-
tion, nutrition and exercise are emphasised in nearly all of his works. In 1994, he founded the Arizona Center
for Integrative Medicine (formerly known as the Program in Integrative Medicine), which off ers an educational programme and an out- patient clinic based on his beliefs of healthy ageing. As of 2008, more than 450 practition- ers from the medical sector had completed his programme and there are now over 40 academic medical centres that off er com- plementary medicine programmes globally. Weil is the director of Integrative Health
and Healing at Miraval Life in Balance Resort in Tucson, Arizona, and an author on healthy lifestyle. He’s published 10 books, with two more on the way, including best-sellers Healthy Aging and 8 Weeks to Optimum Health. In 2000, Weil created Weil Lifestyle LLC, an
