THE RETURN TO PROMINENCE OF STRENGTH TRAINING

inking in with the ‘back to basics’ trend (p98), strength training will continue to re-assert itself in the mar-
ket – both in specialist and mass market clubs – with a particular momentum behind free weights and cable-based functional training. Equipment manufacturers such as York
Barbell UK are reporting a huge growth in demand for equipment such as Olympic bars, in part a result of the boom in the core strength and conditioning programme Crossfi t across the UK. Meanwhile, international sites such as Evo Fitness in Cape Town, South Africa, are focusing almost exclusively on resistance training, even incorporating unusual equip- ment such as heavy chains and tyres alongside more usual forms of free weights. T e value of resistance training in appeal-
ing to high potential, but as yet relatively untapped, markets will also help ensure increasing prominence is given to strength within more traditional health club envi- ronments. Amateur sports enthusiasts, for example, are increasingly recognised as a mar- ket worth tapping in to, while older people can benefi t from a bias towards resistance train- ing, helping them maintain the strength they need to carry out everyday tasks. Also of interest is the expanding category
of varied resistance equipment – circuits from the German manufacturer milon, for exam- ple, as well as new equipment ranges from the likes of Australian company MyoQuip. T anks to automatic adjustments in the lev- els of resistance for concentric and eccentric movements – additional resistance built in where appropriate to ensure maximum eff ort throughout the full range of movement – the muscle is trained to its full potential. news for spas wishing to incorporate small- scale fi tness off erings geared towards older people, who might be interested in combining wellbeing with low-impact workouts.
