PISCINE – LYON, FRANCE

The eyes of the specialist trade all over the world are already turning towards the Piscine 2010 trade exhibition held in Lyon from 16 to 19 November. It is Europe’s biggest pool and spa event of the year and a vital barometer of the state of the industry. In an exclusive interview with Swimming Pool News, Show Director Noémi Petit sets out what the show aims to achieve and why it remains such an important date in the calendar

barometer for the state of the industry T

he 2010 Piscine exhibition in Lyon in November celebrates its 30th anniversary by bringing together three shows into one event.

The four-day show at the Eurexpo Convention

Centre in Lyon from 16 to 19 November will copy the format of the successful 2008 event, held for the first time in conjunction with Aqualie, dedicated to community aquatic leisure and wellness centres and Wellgreen focusing on outdoor pool surrounds. Piscine is launching Piscine Connect, designed

to help professionals make the most of their presence at the show. It will help attendees develop new skills, find information and recruit through the Pool Vision designer section training sessions, jobs forum and early-bird sessions involving experts at the show. In an exclusive Question and Answer interview

Show Director Noémi Petit sets out the themes and hopes for the November event.

What will be new for the 2010 Piscine event in terms of trends and innovation? The whole eco theme is growing rapidly throughout Europe so swimming pool eco

attitude and sustainable development is more and more important. We developed the “Pool Eco Attitude” to attract those sections of the trade who are keen to see ecological issues to the fore in the industry. So those professionals who are interested in

sustainable products and services will be able to come and talk to exhibitors providing energy saving or sustainably manufactured products. We are also highlighting the future of pool

showrooms with our Pool Vision designs. Designing spaces, promoting products and

communicating about services will also be a new theme for us… students from the Créapole interior design school will offer all the advice professionals need to make the most of their show rooms. Every day, from 9:00 to 10:30, mini-seminars

will be led by partners, institutions and exhibitors on the important topics of interest to the market: sustainable pools, the Water Wizard, pool design, hot tubs and the importance of spas for health. Lighting issues will be another important theme for the show which we have called ‘Piscine by Night’: enjoying pools at all times of the day and night. The Wellgreen Piscine by Night Village features

“Pool orders grew by 39% in the last quarter of 2009 and by 15% in the first quarter of 2010”

solutions to transfigure pool surrounds at night and an information centre where professionals can find out about all the latest trends. And of course there’s the traditional Piscine

Party on the Thursday night of the show with the Beaujolais Nouveau!

do you see signs through the event of any recovery from some tough years of recession which has hit the european specialist pool and spa market? Piscine has a close relationship with all the major pool manufacturing brands and has strong links with most of the European associations and world press – so we can get a good feel for how the industry is doing. I would say that France for example which

represents 70% of Piscine visitors has recovered after a very difficult year in 2009. Pool orders grew by 39% in the last quarter of 2009 and by 15% in the first quarter of 2010. And 2009 was not so bad because French pool

builders built or installed 60,000 pools (only 1.5% less than 2008). It is important also to say that Piscine welcomes

other markets like Spain (1.2 million pools), Italy (650,000 pools), Germany (more than 900,000 pools), altogether, Piscine represents a swimming pool market of a potential 5 million pools. For those countries, the situation differs from

one country to another (new developments in booming Eastern European countries like Croatia, Serbia, Romania…), still growing demand for equipment in recent booming countries like
