‘It Is Important we raIse the standards wIthIn our Industry’

BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes reflects on the feel good factor of the recent good weather and the importance of raising standards within the industry

W

ith summer now upon us there has been a general improvement in the weather and this is

always a good indicator of increasing people’s “feel good factor”. Members appear to be very busy

and this is another good sign to provide a snapshot of how companies are faring. Any good weather that we have may be a blessing and also a potential issue, as from October onwards the expected implementation of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 will commence.

Our industry needs good weather to encourage people to

buy products such as pools, hot tubs and swim spas, etc, but if the good weather also means low rainfall, then swimming pool companies will now need to be mindful of possible water shortages and hose pipe bans. It will therefore be important to give consumers details of how to conserve water and a factsheet has just been revised for SPATA members outlining ways in which the pool user can save precious water. Other factsheets have also been produced on important

topics such as Building Regulations Part L and others are in draft format. I am pleased to report that both BISHTA members and SPATA members have been provided with their copy of the

relevant Trade Association Standards. It is important to ensure that we raise the Standards within our industry and feedback is always helpful to shape the future direction of these materials. In the last issue of SPN, there was an article featuring news about the SPATA Standards and a photo was used to accompany the article. This photo has received some negative feedback from a SPATA member as the image did not accurately portray the key Health and Safety messages within our industry. In this instance, I am more than happy to acknowledge my error in using the photo with this article and have asked the company to provide me with more suitable images in case we ever need to use a similar image again. It is very important that we try and set Standards and this includes any images that we use. As a general plea (especially to BISHTA and SPATA members) please can you send me photos of your pools, hot tubs, saunas, etc, with permission to use the images in relevant industry publications or in other literature. In terms of the standards within the hot tub industry,

elsewhere in SPN you will find the latest member benefits relating to BISHTA and there is also a lot more publicity being generated by BOTTLE PR. One of their latest successes was a feature in the Sunday Times and with their media contacts we are really starting to see a difference in the quality and scope of the PR that is benefitting our industry. I am constantly on the lookout for potential new partners

that can offer a range of services to member companies. One of the latest links is to RAM tracking, who offer a complete package of hardware and software to get best use from the vehicles out on the road. There is a separate feature in this issue of SPN on the benefits available from this company. LIW is fast approaching and SPATA will again be providing

some workshops, so any of the industry that is exhibiting or visiting the show should come and visit us. SPATA is always grateful to Wright Hassall Solicitors for their

support and advice and there is an article from Stuart Thwaites in this issue of SPN highlighting how you can maximise the chances of being paid for the work that you do. Also in this issue of SPN, I am delighted to see that Ben

Studdy from Certikin International (and the current BSPF President) has been asked for his views about the industry, there are some thought provoking comments from Ben, I hope you have time to read what he has to say. His piece can be read on page 96 of this edition. Finally, please note the diary dates to the left, including the

AGMs in September and the President’s Weekend in Blackpool this October.
