of Heritage Pools said, “The build of the Splash Landings WaterPark was unusual as we had to build the pools in stages to fit in with the rest of the build. One of the key client requests was to avoid straight edges anywhere within the pools, so we used lightweight shutter ply and hardboard to create the shape before construction with shotcrete.” The remit was for three outdoor

HerITAge creATes splAsH lAndIngs pool for AlTon Towers

Heritage Pools has completed one of the most exciting, innovative and challenging family water parks in the UK with the creation of nine pools for the Alton Towers Splash Landings Hotel in Staffordshire. The remit was for nine, interactive

pools that link seamlessly into each other providing different water experiences within each area. The design of the pool consciously

sought to offer quality play for each age group to ensure that every member of the family would be well catered for. The remit also stipulated that the pool area should be both indoors and outdoors to make it suitable for all weathers, adding the challenge that the atmosphere within the complex should be the same both inside and out. New pool feNciNg system aNticipates chaNges iN the law

The chances of fencing around residential pools becoming a legal requirement in the UK in the next few years is starting to grow as the number of child deaths by drowning increases. There is an industry view that all of Europe may soon have to follow the trend of France and Australia in making pool fencing a legal necessity and this is already starting to attract new products on the market. J Preedy & Sons have been

developing glass and glazing products and services since 1913, when the company was established. Four months ago the company

expanded its range with a safety fencing system for swimming pools. “The original idea came from

Australia where pool fencing is law. Ever since we introduced the product we just haven’t been able to keep up with demand,” says Barry Preedy.

The Prefit Pool Fencing provides

a sophisticated and elegant safety system. The fencing is made of stainless

steel fittings and

frameless glass. “Prefit Pool Fencing offers a

secure way of eliminating the dangers of swimming pools from young children and pets. It is easy to install to a variety of substrates and can be supplied with different fixing details and a variety of designs,” adds Barry. The glass supplied is 12mm

toughened float, manufactured to CE standards and comes with polished edges and is pre-drilled for the supports.

pools, one with therapy seats, an interactive children’s pool, beach area, whirlpool, river rapid and two flume exit pools, which came together to offer enormous variety for all ages. Pools included: • Lagoona Bay – The main tropical pool, complete with geysers, waterfalls and a water cannon

• Whacky Waterworks – Over 70 watery play features for kids to explore

• The Little Leak – Mini Lagoona Bay with slides and water squirters for the younger ones

• Bubbly Wubbly Pool – Outdoor spa pool

• The Master Blaster – The fastest water coaster in the UK

• Volcano Springs – Warm water tropical whirlpool

• Lazy River – Rubber ring ride around the water park

• Flash Flood – A tropical whirlpool with slides, three separate pools

• The Tipping Bucket – 1,000 litres of water that tips out on a timer

The pool construction was shotcrete concrete which created the main, free form shapes. Each pool was finished in Diamond Bright, white cement and green marble chippings to give the feel of a Caribbean lagoon and a more natural finish. Mosaic tiles were used on the deck channel areas and were rendered to give a smooth, non-slip surface. The roof was created using the

same ‘bubble’ style roofing used in the Eden Project, ensuring that daylight came in as well as the night sky, offering the same environment both inside and out. The project was completed on

time and within budget through good co-operation between Heritage Pools, architects and other builders, working together for the benefit of the client. “It was a great project to work on and we are pleased with the results,” said Andrews.

GOLDEN COAST LIVES UP TO ITS NAME

Living up to the company’s name, two directors of Barnstaple-based Golden Coast – Managing Director, Jamie Adams and younger brother Dominic – joined more than 300 cyclists in Devon’s annual ‘Coast To Coast’ bike ride from Plymouth to Barnstaple recently, helping to raise a total of more than £30,000 in aid of the North Devon Hospice. With two routes to choose from, a direct 69 miles or a ‘zig-zag’ 99 miles, the two chose one each, finishing the course in 4hr 45min and 6hr 40min respectively. “This is now the third time we have taken part in this ride but our efforts in

tackling the course with its notorious Devon hills is small compared to the work of those at the hospice,” said Jamie Adams.
