absorbing safety surfaces and foam padding and cladding. All of which can be customised to suit demand and, in most cases, themed or coloured to blend in with the existing surround. Adding toys to a domestic swimming pool will

not only create fun and entertainment for children but at the same time give them confidence in the water, especially if you start them young. To meet this need, a new catalogue of pools toys for 2010 has been produced by Golden Coast, including six new toys and games and a range of other fun and learning products. For the very young the ‘Toddler Seat’ provides

the first experience of the water in a safe and protected environment. Complete with a canopy to protect children from direct sunlight, ideal for use in unshaped pools, the Toddler Seat allows the child to join in the family fun in the pool. The floating bendable ‘Pool Noodles’ not only

add fun to swimming but also promote exercise, whilst their look-a-like ‘Eliminator’ turns out to be a pump-action water blaster, capable of shooting water over a distance of ten metres. The water-powered ‘Whac-a-Mole’ blaster spins

and moves a ‘mole’ across a pool at random, squirting water and encouraging children to ‘bopp’im’ on the head with a special mallet to stop his antics – before he starts all over again! There’s even a similar version based on a garden sprinkler for use outside the pool. For those looking for a quieter life yet wanting

to bring some entertainment into their pool or spa, there is the underwater ‘Light Splash’ literally to add a ‘splash’ of colour with five colour- changing light shows. Then there’s the floating ‘Light-up Racers’– Duck, Dolphin, Turtle and Shark – that float around a pool or spa, shedding super- bright colour co-ordinated LED light. Jo Coveney at Airquee said the company is one

of the leading manufacturers of castles, pool inflatables, aqua runs, obstacle courses, swimming pool obstacle courses and slides. Top of the ‘fun rating ‘ is the Aquaruns which

offer kids the chance to chase along elaborate game-like extended pool floats with in-built obstacles challenges and diversions. “The inflatables are very colourful and great

fun and once the kids get the chance to use them we find they are great crowd pleasers. It’s a good strong market – commercial pools are certainly looking for more ways of attracting families in. I think they feel now they need that

something extra – more than just swimming.” Yorkshire based Bee-Tee say there is little

reluctance from local authorities to invest in the right sort of pool toys. Manager Glenn Turner said: “Since the end of

free swimming, people are certainly looking for something new and something which will attract the children and their parents.” A high quality pool inflatable isn’t necessarily

cheap and costing up to £3,000 needs be right to attract more people into the pool. For 2010 Ustigate, Waterplay and Vortex have

introduced new Watergarden play product designs, developed to reinforce our toddler and family lines. The company is the UK distributor of the highly rated Vortex products with access to 500 different water play products. Said the company: “Vortex has invested decades

into their research and development to ensure that their products are safe, durable and will provide endless hours of fun –making them one of the best water play product manufacturers in the world. Ustigate Waterplay who have been in the pool

inflatables market for 15 years decided to changes things and give their brand a new look two years ago. The move has been a successful one as it builds on its high profile with local authorities looking to invest substantially in new water attractions. Last year the new Splashpad at the Ruislip Lido, in the London Borough of Hillingdon, was a high

profile project and now the company has stepped up its local authority profile. Last year the Hillingdon Splashpad was tested and opened as scheduled. It’s bright and colourful surfacing allows people to imagine their wet feet coming out of the water, onto the sand and running to the Ruislip Lido café. This idea came from a local resident who wanted the Splashpad to fit in with the immediate surroundings. The Splashpad from Ustigate includes 11

different play features to ensure that they appeal to children of all ages and abilities. spn
