With many leisure facilities currently looking for ways to cut costs yet uphold their client services, Coventry Sports Foundation confirms that in- house training has been the key in creating significant cost savings and has served to raise standards further. Kayle Burgham, the Foundation’s

Senior Sports Development Officer says; “By working in partnership with the STA, I am able to deliver all the swimming teaching, lifeguarding and first aid qualifications required for all staff across our three sites. The nature of the leisure industry means

we have a high turnover of staff, so by being able to run in-house training courses on a continuous basis, the Foundation is saving thousands of pounds every year.” The Sports Foundation first started

working with the STA in 2002, in response to an initial brief to provide a more cost effective way of delivering Swimming Teaching training to facilitate the expansion of its Aquarius Swim School. Since this time, with the support of the STA, the Foundation has significantly grown its swimming lesson programmes. The

collaboration which is potentially life-saving. Drowning is a major cause of death from injury for all ages and of the hundreds who drown in British waters each year many lives could have been saved if safety advice had been followed.” According to the World Health

Organisation, drowning is the second leading cause of death from injury for children in the UK. Worldwide, more

• Always swim with others • Obey all safety signs and warning flags

• Never go in the water after drinking alcohol

with the STA was very much focused on training, developing and sustaining Swimming Teachers and Lifeguards. However, it quickly became apparent that the STA had a lot more to offer, and today we now utilise the STA’s range of First Aid, Manual Handling and Customer Service qualifications, in addition to the many specialist swimming programmes like disability swimming. “The STA has played a huge role in

our success, and not only in terms of the breadth of qualifications available. They give us the freedom to schedule courses to suit our needs; there are no restrictions placed upon us in terms of when we can run our courses or how much we charge. Significantly, there are no additional costs to pay to become an approved training centre.”
