and screed, back fill material behind the pool and ground / soil conditions. Therefore, the swimming pool shell may need
to have additional insulation, unless it can be proved that the soil, concrete and any other materials can produce the required minimum thermal efficiency. Where additional insulation is provided, suppliers must be able to demonstrate by calculation that it is fit for purpose, such as that the material is suitable to be used below the damp proof course (DPC). It is also possible that the thermal efficiency of
the walls (which might be higher than the floor) can offset a lower thermal efficiency for the floor to ensure the overall thermal efficiency meets the new requirements of 0.25W/M2K. It is anticipated that these calculations will be
available from a number of sources and SPATA will endeavour to compile a list of any suitable places to obtain the calculations, especially from current SPATA members. This factsheet will be updated to include sample calculations to highlight the type of information that will be needed.
What are the main changes to the BIsHta standards and when do they come into effect? Like the SPATA Standards, BISHTA’s modified Standards are due to come into effect from 1 July this year. The Standards reflect the wording, “Evolution, not Revolution”. They are more user friendly and with a range of appendices with useful support materials included. In addition to Domestic Self-Contained Portable Spas and Hot Tubs, the Standards are now extended to cover Swim Spas. There’s information on:
• Microbiology • Ozone and added UV • Electrics • Chemical cleaning of pipe work and Biofilm removal
New items include: • Covers and Cover Lifters • Steps • Umbrellas • Maintenance of these as well as the spa cabinets
Remember pH in spas should be between 7.0 and 7.6. More appendices are due to follow, giving
further advice for the user, advice for the rental industry and advice for hot tubs in holiday lodges. This information will be made available to BISHTA members.

Vehicle tracking systems now a key business tool
Vehicle tracking systems are now seen as an important business tool, providing better information for customers in terms of arrival times, reducing fuel consumption and generally increasing customer satisfaction. SPATA has been working with Remote Asset Management who have already proved themselves and their system to SPATA member Portrait Pools. Remote Asset Management Ltd is a market
leading vehicle tracking company with over 3,000 customers of all different shapes and sizes. RAM are winners of National Business Awards for Customer Focus and Entrepreneurship. They are specialists in user- friendly vehicle tracking. Portrait Pools has an outstanding reputation as
one of the UK’s leading pool builders with over 20 years experience of award winning pool design, technical support and maintenance. They are dedicated to providing the very best service for their customers. Andrew Rutherford, Director of Portrait Pools
says: “We decided to look into vehicle tracking to tighten up what time our employees arrive on site and what time they finish. We also get calls for customers wanting to know when someone is going to arrive and we felt that vehicle tracking would help us with accurate ETAs. Keeping our
clients happy is an absolute priority for us. “With Ram Tracking we have noticed that our
days start off a lot smoother. Staff are now setting off a little earlier and are getting on site on time and spend less time stuck in traffic on route to jobs. We have seen a definite improvement in productivity from the very first week we had the system installed. “One of the biggest benefits to us is using the
historic reports to verify employee timesheets. This one aspect alone saves us many hundreds of pounds each month and massively cuts down on a load of office admin.” Ram have been attending some of the regional
SPATA meetings providing members with live vehicle tracking demonstrations and general advice about their product. Topics include how tracking can dramatically reduce fuel consumption and improve staff productivity plus how it can help increase customer satisfaction – and lead to better response times for maintenance calls.
