SPN AUG 2010 WaterTesting TEST AND TABLET OPTIONS

Test strips – The basic three-way pre-formulated test strips measures free sanitizer, pH and total alkalinity at a glance. The results will indicate whether the water is in the proper range or needs attention. The test is so easy that regular use is no pain at all. Test strips on the market will test everything from Baquacil to nitrate and salt levels.

Tablets tests – Liquid and tablet test kits use a chemical called DPD as the indicator to measure free chlorine. High levels of combined chlorine, or chloramines, can cause false positives when using a DPD test for free chlorine. Low to moderate levels of combined chlorine is neutralised in most DPD kits. Chloramines do not react with syringaldazine. The liquid or tablet kit may show there is some significant level of free chlorine present when the test strips show that there is no free chlorine in the water.

Checker – combining professional accuracy with great pricing at just £39.50. Using DPD technology testing is quick, easy and accurate. The LCD display gives a clear digital readout and a useful auto-shut off feature makes sure the Checker cannot be left on in a pocket by mistake. Together these two handy little meters are revolutionising water testing for swimming pool users across the country. Certikin has its solution with the Scuba pool

tester which is accurate and requires no test vials or tubes. It gives a reading in seconds and weighs 100g. The Scuba is an immersible test device which

uses the same technology that is used in public swimming pools. A sample of the water is tested using the photometric principle and the results are shown in the high-precision digital display.

The unit has a modern housing designed to meet ergonomic requirements and is fully water tight. The Scuba is supplied complete with specially

formulated, quick-dissolving reagent tablets (10 for each test method). It also has a handy strap so that it can be hung safely in a storage area. Two models are available, one which tests for

chlorine, pH and alkalinity and the other for chlorine, pH and cyanuric acid (stabiliser). One factor in comparing test results is the

precision factor. Most liquid/tablet kits allow for very precise readings for certain parameters. Total alkalinity and hardness, for example, are measured in increments of 10ppm. This allows the user to determine within 10ppm what the actual result is. Golden Coast has re-introduced its unique

‘Swimmer Water Analysis Software’, to support the pool trade and enable dealers to have customers’ pool and spa water tested for quality. First launched in the early 1990s, the software,

which has undergone a complete facelift, allows dealers to develop a comprehensive database of their customers’ pools and spas. In conjunction with water laboratory testing, dealers can provide a detailed analysis of the water quality of customers’ pools or spas, enabling them to give a series of recommendations to rectify any problems. In addition, owners looking for a quick and

easy way to check pool water quality rather than using the traditional testing method of taking a water sample, adding a reagent tablet and referring to a colour chart, have a choice of three systems available from Golden Coast. The state-of-the-art CoolPooltester uses similar

technology to the photometers used by professionals and reads the colour electronically

TSL 100 test strips from POOL-id allow

simultaneous measurement of pH and chlorine and/or bromine and alkalinity values

to give an instant, accurate numerical readout eliminating human error and reducing hassle. There is also the ‘Pooltest 6’ kit, a hand-held

photometer that tests the levels of chlorine, pH and cyanuric acid, plus bromine, alkalinity and calcium hardness of the water. Alternatively, the easy-to-use pre-formulated

‘Insta-Test’ strips also provide instant results. The user just swirls the test strip in the water and reads the levels off against pre-graduated scales printed on the moisture-proof plastic canister container. Two kits are available with 50 strips in each

pack: the Insta-Test 3 which tests for free chlorine, bromine, as well as pH, alkalinity and water hardness, and the Insta-Test 5, which covers all the above and also tests for total chlorine and total hardness. In keeping with the ongoing development of

the Swimmer brand, new products added to the line up this year includes a starter pack for above- ground pools with everything required to prepare a new pool for use. To counteract the effects of contaminants

that lead to hazy water, yet allowing the pool or spa to be used an hour after treatment, Golden Coast has introduced a shock-dose ‘Swimmer Oxidiser’ and ‘Spa Refresh’. There are three new larger packs sizes of

Calcium Hypochlorite Granules at 10kg, 25kg and 40kg, whilst for the first time the Swimmer range

“Achieving clear water is critical but maintaining a strong testing regime which

ensures that it stays that way is turning out to be big business”
