T

he events of the last few weeks in terms of the news coming out of the new coalition Government remind us a bit about the line of whether a glass is half empty or half full. So for the record we go for the half full option.

The end to the free swimming programme this summer and the axing of new swimming pools to be built in the run up to the 2012 Olympics will have long term implications for the industry and there is no getting away from the fact that it’s not positive news. But the glass half full evidence is still

considerable. Some wonderful early summer weather has the

trade buzzing with activity. Whoever said that when the sun shines trade picks up got it right. We’ve never heard so many people saying how busy they are – and the way hot tub manufacturers and distributors are talking about the last few months is music to the ears. Other themes strike us as important. Firstly the

Government, for all its examination of current swimming pool projects, is still committed to leave a long term legacy after the 2012 Olympics with more new pools built in the last three years than have been built in the previous 10. Secondly, the Government’s committment to

the reduction of CO2 and energy conservation is set to provide an ever increasing market for heat pumps, pool covers and solar products as pool owners are persuaded to cut energy bills. In this issue of SPN we make no apology for

highlighting the challenges which now clearly face the UK’s larger commercial pools. When Local Authority Association spokesman

Nigel Eyre reported on the impact of cuts affecting commercial pools he said: “When local authorities look, as they have to, at major savings they will certainly look at leisure facilities or luxury items first. We are aware that swimming pools may have to be closed or face reduced hours.” Yet surely the challenge in this entire cost cutting

is for pool owners and managers, backed with some great specialist trade systems and products, to retain the highest standard of swimming facilities as is possible over the next few years. Few will have the capital investment to start

refurbishing/upgrading equipment and it is about being proactive in maintaining facilities to prolong the life of equipment. Good housekeeping will cut costs. Better

trained staff will be vital. One company specialising in helping larger

pools on costs tells us in this issue of SPN: “We are still in the ‘fix it when it breaks’ culture which in the long run is more costly. Knowing how to do a simple task such as hoovering the pool or cleaning the scum line will keep your pool aesthetically pleasing to the customer and potential members”. Reducing energy consumption, and by using

the skills and knowledge of the products within the specialist pool and trade there’s enough support and ideas around for it not all to be doom and gloom. Making this sort of effort will have a legacy of

keeping as many swimming pools open and viable as is possible.
