brand, Top Gear demonstrates how a UK magazine can cut through
cultural barriers and engage a truly global audience. In 2008, the
magazine expanded into new continents, with launches in Europe and
Australasia smashing their predicted circulation targets, and became
the biggest motoring title in the world, selling over one million copies
every month. The magazine also expanded its Asian portfolio with
a licence in Hong Kong, and powered into leading positions with its
existing licences in the Philippines, Romania, Bulgaria and Russia. In
2008, revenues exceeded £1 million for the first time, providing 60% of
the licensing revenue within BBC Magazines.
Covering over 50 territories and 15 different languages, the Top Gear
portfolio has increased from less than five international editions
in 2004 to an impressive 23 today. The judges said: “Top Gear has
shown consistent brand values across its network, with exceptional
circulations for new launches in a difficult period for the motoring
industry.”
