PUBLISHER OF THE YEAR
(ANNUAL TURNOVER
UNDER £5 MILLION)
Mike Soutar
ShortList
ShortList.Media
As the creator of one of the world’s most successful media brands in
FHM, and a former Editorial Director and Managing Director at IPC
Media, ShortList took Mike from a plush office with his own PA to a
small desk on a crowded and poorly heated floor as he threw himself
into creating an entirely new way of reaching upmarket men.
Mike has placed himself at the centre of all the key aspects of the
business – taking younger members of the editorial team to meet
important celebrity agents, and helping commercial managers to lunch
key media buyers. He is a familiar figure on distribution days, stalking
the merchandisers to ensure that they are handing out magazines.
Mike’s legendary vitality is combined with a tough line on negotiations.
His ability to keep costs down while fuelling the business with
inspiring initiatives has made ShortList a lean but groundbreaking title.
In its first complete year, ShortList achieved an incredible turnover,
exceeded plan and turned an operating profit on three issues. The
judges said: “ShortList is an original and exciting concept. Mike has led
a great team effort with a real sense of fun and achieved phenomenal
results against all the odds.”
