COLUMNIST OF THE YEAR
(CONSUMER MAGAZINES)
Monty Don
Gardeners’ World
BBC.Magazines
Monty is a hands-on gardener who writes from the soul, fusing
practical knowledge with deep personal insight. He articulates the
inner reasons why so many people garden, and elevates apparently
simple, practical advice into engaging reflections that strike a
chord with the growing number of gardeners in search of a deeper
connection with the world around them. Monty engages with every
level of reader, on a wide span of topics. His campaigning pieces,
in particular, stimulate wide debate among readers and the wider
gardening world – much in support of him, some against – but
through all his work, he challenges preconceptions and brings a social
conscience to gardening. In 2008, he generated the biggest mailbag of
any contributor, past or present.
Monty’s features have led several cover stories and been a constant
presence in coverlines, giving Gardeners’ World a distinct advantage
over competitors. The judges said: “Monty has bags of passion and
personality and is an immensely valuable asset to the Gardeners’ World
brand. His writing keeps the reader hooked right until the end, and
provides a real reason to buy the magazine.”
