Welcome
The PPA Awards are universally recognised as the UK’s top magazine and business media awards. It’s an
honour to be shortlisted; it can be a life-changing experience to win. Companies cite success in The PPA
Awards as evidence of the excellence of their titles and their organisation.
This year, the standard of awards entries was exceptionally high, with tough choices for the judges in
deciding who to shortlist; who should win. Many thanks to the stellar cast of judges - their names are listed
on page 4 - and to the two Chairmen, Richard Flaye and Christopher Ward, who moderated the two days
of judging. It was a careful, ordered but nonetheless fun process, in which entries from throughout the
magazine industry were assessed and praised by leading editors, publishers and designers, and by
industry CEOs.
2009 will be remembered as one of the toughest years for our industry. And yet the qualities of imagination,
commercial enterprise, editorial excellence and world-class design shine through. This was, after all, the year
in which the world’s largest print media event - the FIPP World Magazine Congress - came to London against
a dire economic backdrop, and, against the odds, was a superb success. The resilience of the magazine
industry is one of its great strengths, together with its ability to adapt to changing society and changing
technology: delivering wonderfully designed and high value content to communities of readers and users,
and, at the same time, providing a route for advertisers to reach engaged and motivated communities.
Criteria for The PPA Awards have been reviewed and rewritten this year across all categories. This process will
continue each year, as the technology changes and as means of delivery expand.
The UK magazine industry provides a brilliant combination of imagination, innovation, technological
exploration, world-class design, high value content, high value entertainment, excitement, dynamism,
commercial awareness, and a unique relationship with readers, users and communities. Magazines produce
a society which is better read, better informed, better entertained. The talent and enterprise of the UK
magazine and business media industry make it one of the best places to work anywhere in the world. The
PPA Awards celebrate and showcase the best of that talent, and success in the Awards is, as it should be, a
career high. Thanks and congratulations to all entrants, to all on the shortlists, and to all winners.
