EDITOR OF THE YEAR
(CONSUMER MAGAZINES)
Alexander Milas
Metal Hammer
Future.Publishing
Alexander loves heavy metal music and understands what his readers
want because they are ‘just like him’. In his first year as editor, in a
recession year, with the music industry on its knees, he steered Metal
Hammer through a redesign, secured world-class contributors, and
backed festivals and tours viewed by over 11 million people across
Europe. In fact, Alexander does far more than edit a magazine – he
manages an international brand that echoes the same editorial values:
total journalistic professionalism, entertaining content, stunning
visual presentation, and collectible issues that reflect the collecting-
oriented habits of heavy metal fans. He even figured out how to be the
first metal magazine to produce an issue made out of metal.
In 2008, Metal Hammer not only increased turnover by 10%, it exceeded
a landmark 50,000 circulation for the first time, trumping even the
NME’s circulation figures. The judges said: “A unanimous decision.
Alexander lives and breathes the world of heavy metal – the magazine
drips with as much enthusiasm as it does blood! To have conceived and
then achieved the idea of entombing an issue of the magazine in a
metal sleeve should be an inspiration to every editor to fight for
crazy ideas.”
