Deidre was one of the few reporters in the world to gain access to
Zimbabwe in 2008. In the course of her investigation, she showed
considerable bravery, defying Zimbabwean security forces to gain
the confidence of local people. Another investigation lifted the lid on
Rupert Murdoch’s failing plans to build a new ‘super-HQ’ for News
International at Wapping. Deidre obtained confidential documentation
outlining Murdoch’s property strategy from under the noses of the rest
of the national press and with the credit crunch throwing this strategy
into disarray, was the first journalist to reveal the problems. Deidre’s
financial acumen was also on display in ‘Barclays Burned’, a piece
summing up the problems faced by banks overreaching themselves in
property development, and written despite legal threats from Barclays.
In an era when editorial budgets are being slashed and the focus is
often on instant, online journalism, investigations like Deidre’s are all
too rare. The judges said: “Deidre has an impressive grasp of a wide
range of topics underpinned by an equally top-flight contact list. She is
not afraid to ask difficult questions and her work demonstrates huge
amounts of originality and flair.”
