Another purpose-designed product provided a 200-ton lift capacity for handling BOP equipment offshore. Cranes for use in the corrosive atmospheres of the galvanic industry have also been supplied. The J D Neuhaus cranes are insensitive to dust,

humidity and aggressive atmospheres as standard, operating within a temperature range of -20°C to +70°C. They provide 100% duty ratings with no downtime and only minimum maintenance require- ments. Overload protection and fail-safe braking are incorporated, together with emergency-stop safety features. Special limit switch arrangements for end- travel, anti-collision and protected zone status are also incorporated as required. ■

Selecting Materials for the Production of Quality Ductile Iron

Whereas preconditioning, nodularization and inoculation

in the production of ductile iron may all be regarded as sepa- rate processes, the overall effects cannot be separated. A poor choice in selecting any one of these can have a very negative effect on the quality of the final iron. For this reason alone, metalcasters should have a “treat-

ment champion” who has a good working knowledge of the effects of alloys on the treatment processes. Tis will vary, and each foundry is individual in terms of their conditions. Elkem, Oslo, Norway, has developed product portfolios designed to meet the vast majority of these needs. At the beginning of the process, selection of decent

quality raw materials and charge alloys will add nuclei to the iron. Where the melting furnace is large or the overall holding time is long, the addition of Preseed preconditioner is often seen as beneficial, as it adds and stabilizes nuclei and ensures optimum graphite nucle- ation during the solidification. Most metalcasting facilities are conscious of environ-

mental concerns and want to get the highest efficiency from their MgFeSi alloy. Low reactivity alloys and alloys designed to help control shrinkage, for example, are available as the technology of MgFeSi alloys advances. Elkem has a wide range of chemistries available designed to suit all treatment vessel sizes and designs. Having created a nodularized iron with residual nucle-

ation, the final stage of inoculation is possibly the most crucial in the process, particularly as OEM demands on the iron increase. Selection of the correct inoculant, or in many cases multiple inoculants, will have a significant bearing on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the iron. OEM requirements to meet legislations will increase.

Solid solution strengthened ferritic ductile irons for example, are beginning to emerge from the infancy stage. While these present new challenges to the metalcaster, Elkem has pack-

ages of products available, optimized for these irons. ■ For further information, please contact your local Elkem representative.
