ing Systems features a modular plunger tip with a replaceable split ring (AMP-R) using an ultra-high strength and high thermal conductivity BeCu alloy with excellent thermal and dimensional stability. In addition, the AMP plunger tip can extract heat faster and reduce casting cycle time. The modular design of the AMP greatly reduces the cost of the plunger tip. A tempered split ring rests freely in a groove, machined near the front of the AMP plunger tip. The split ring is the consum- able. The specially designed stainless steel holder with coolant channels produce a high velocity flow with an additional turbulence of water passing through the inner face of the holder. This achieves maximum heat transfer and cooling. Table 1 compares the Castool AMP-R tip to a
steel tip. The AMP-R tip has a lower surface tem- perature and a lower thermal expansion than the steel tip. Less thermal expansion means less thermal stress induced during casting. The thermal stress of the AMP tip is about a third the steel tip. Castool’s AMP tip can extract heat 65% faster than a conventional
steel tip, reducing overall casting cycle time. ■ Visit

Supplier Provides Risk Mitigation Strategy for Investment Casting Te metalcasting industry, by its nature, works in an

environment with a multitude of risk scenarios to man- age. Apart from the obvious concerns of safety, crucial to a foundry’s business model is the maintenance of productivity, and anything that unfavorably affects productivity is a cost. Te key to increasing profitability is to make product faster and/or reduce scrap rates. For both, there is a reliance on the supplier base to be able to provide the materials technol- ogy to achieve these goals and drive profitability. However, significant risks are attached to making changes to a process, particularly the trialling of new materials, due to the ef- fect on production capacity, time spent and potential for increased scrap rates during initial roll-out. Risk relating to trialling new consumables can be charac-
terized as strategic: voluntarily acceptable in order to generate superior returns. Tis is not undesirable, as a strategy that is expected to yield higher returns will generally require a company to take on a significant risk. Te Chartered Institute of Purchase and Supply recommends the use of suppliers as a resource in which to balance the mitigation of risks.
