MIDDLESBOROUGH REGENERATION A
raft of major multi-million pound regeneration projects are underway
transforming Middlesbrough into a regional city centre. Business developments, leisure opportunities and new homes are all part of the work underway beneath the umbrella of Middlesbrough Council’s Investment Strategy to drive growth and prosperity. Over the next four years the Council is
committed to an injection of £74 million into a series of developments as part of the town’s far-reaching Investment Prospectus. The aim is that this confidence in
Middlesbrough’s growing stature as the city heart of the Tees Valley will act as a catalyst for the creation of 5,000 new jobs in the town, in tandem with more than £600 million of inward investment from the private sector and other parts of the public sector. Among the major projects in the
pipeline already are: • A £30m snow centre with the potential to create more than 350 jobs and deliver a venue of regional and national stature. Planning permission was recently approved.
• Five Grade A office blocks to the east of Centre Square, one of the biggest public spaces of its kind in the UK and already host to an international modern art gallery. The new development will
provide 200,000 sq ft of space and provide for 1,500 new jobs.
• Middlesbrough Town Hall is undergoing a near £8m refurbishment which will make it the premier concert space in the Tees Valley and includes new bars and cafes, meeting space and the restoration of its Victorian court room and cells.
• Centre North East, the tallest tower block in the north east, is being refurbished from disused office space into Turtle Bay restaurant, Soho nightclub, a micropub, gym, quality apartments and a sky bar on the top floor. The Council’s Investment Prospectus
also includes plans for Middlehaven, home to Middlesbrough Football Club and Middlesbrough College, one of which is for a new dock bridge which will open up further access to the land. Work will also see a new Police HQ, a
masterplan for new business park at Hemlington Grange, the development of Teesside Advanced Manufacturing Park, the revival of the Railway Station and historic quarter – and direct trains to London guaranteed from 2020. Finally, growth and prosperity through
housing will see 7,000 new homes by 2029 and Teesside Media Innovation Village will see a major restructure of Middlesbrough Town Centre.
