THE KIA AURA I
n this issue we have the pleasure of reviewing two excellent cars from the
innovative Korean manufacturer Kia: the cee’d and the Venga. Let’s first turn our attention to the cee’d. We tested the Sportswagon 1.6 CRDi ‘2’ 7-speed auto DCT ISG and found that this sporty family hatchback is surprisingly spacious. As well as the 60:40 split folding rear seats there are two ingenious underfloor storage compartments, a deep area at the front and a larger compartmentalised underfloor box at the centre for different sized items, all of which creates a car which is great for holidays, sports and business. And styling on the cee’d Sportwagon is simply gorgeous, with smooth flowing lines, a sporty grille with graphite chrome surround and very attractive 17” alloy wheels, creating a family hatchback which has an exciting aura. When we climbed into the passenger cabin we were very impressed with its wide range of smart technology, including USB and AUX Ports, Bluetooth with voice recognition and music streaming, DAB radio, MP3 player and 6 speakers for an excellent in-car sound. Putting the cee’d through its paces on
the open road was also a pleasure and a revelation. The 1.5 litre 16 valve engine delivers power enthusiastically, generating lots of torque, 0-62 acceleration in just over 10 seconds and a top speed of 124 mph. Kia’s technological department are also creating high performance power units which are very economical, and therefore environmentally friendly, with the cee’d

Sportwagon retuning and huge 72.4 mpg in the combined cycle. All in all, we strongly recommend you take a close look at this great car as we did. Let’s now turn to the Venga. This small
family hatchback has a pleasingly tall stance for a car in this category, which adds to the sense of light and space in the interior and underscores the Venga as a more practical and accommodating car than many of its
competitors. Reminiscent of the Fiat 500 we felt it had a very appealing and curvaceous shape with great visibility all round. The Venga also boasts a myriad of superb features including a handy tilt and telescopic steering wheel adjustment and steering wheel mounted controls for easy access to music and handsfree phone. There’s a great choice of engines in this range to suit your preference, including 1.4 litre 89 bhp petrol engine with 5-speed manual transmission and a 1.6 litre 123 bhp petrol engine available in a choice of 6- speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Just like the cee’d, space is copious in the Venga too, with a vast 1,253 litres of cargo bay. The 1.4 litre 4 cylinder engine on the
model we tested is surprisingly nippy, especially in low gears, making it very responsive and fun to drive around town. When out on the road in the Venga you get the distinct impression of a family-oriented car which has been built with safety in mind, with features including ABS with Brake Assist System, Electronic Stability Control, Vehicle Stability Management and Hill-Start Assist Control. The Venga is technologically up-to-date in every respect and the highly efficient engine on the model we drove returned a72.4 mpg in the Extra Urban cycle. The Cee’d range starts at £15, 365 on
