DEVELOPMENTS UNDERWAY ON NEWCASTLE SCIENCE CENTRAL


The Core


ewcastle Science Central, part of a £92m Accelerated Development Zone, has seen significant development over the past year. Following the opening of The Core, a collaborative office space, in February 2015, The Key, Newcastle University’s first building on site, in February 2016 and with the Newcastle University’s Urban Sciences Building now under construction, plans are also underway for a Learning and Teaching Centre and Newcastle Laboratory which will offer high quality, incubation and grow-on accommodation specifically geared to science-based commercial activities. It has also been announced that two national centres of excellence will be based on site – highlighting the city’s national significance in research, technology and innovation, leading the future cities agenda. within the Urban Sciences Building. While the £30 million National Institute for Smart Data Innovation (NISDI), which will unleash the potential offered by big data - bringing together industry, the public sector and world-leading academics to develop the skills, ideas and resources needed to exploit the opportunities offered by the explosion in digital data, will be housed in a bespoke building on site.

The 24 acre mixed-used site is a hub where investors, businesses, entrepreneurs, students, scientists and citizens can collaborate, innovate and develop solutions for tomorrow’s cities; creating a global centre for urban innovation in the heart of the city. The project is delivered through a dedicated, long-term partnership between Newcastle City Council and Newcastle University through the Science City Partnership.
