his month we review the sumptuous Audi SQ5 and 7. There is no mistaking the large single frame grille of an Audi with its distinctive four linked rings. It’s a good looking, impressive marque of union. The Audi SQ5 and its larger seven-seater Q7 have all the hallmarks of Audi’s pedigree DNA.
The Q5 crosses the high ground clearance and short overhangs of an SUV with the long flowing roofline of a coupé. A high shoulder line and the lower dynamic curve alongside the doors give the car a sense of movement even when standing still. 18” alloy wheels add style and sporty overtones together with classy Xenon headlights. 540 litres of space opens up with all seven seats in use. As we climbed into the interior the superb finish was evident immediately. Soft leather upholstery, beautifully contoured seating throughout with an elevated driving position makes for fantastic driving experience. The Q5 offers high-tech driver aids with a 12.3” razor sharp, high contrast display for speed and navigation control, voice activation and integrated steering control. The Q7 heralded the arrival of Audi’s Q range back in 2007 and remains its flagship model. With an impressive muscular exterior the Q7 seven seater stands for safety, dynamism and purpose. High wheel arches sit aloft 19” alloy wheels, with chunky front and back curved platform configurations which offer superb off-road performance. We visited France recently on business (sadly a long time before the Euros!) and cruising down the A26 towards Lens and greatly enjoyed Audi’s all-wheel drive, which is smooth, responsive and agile. In the passenger cabin it is the wrap around leather interior that’s striking. Driver comfort is paramount, with the same high-tech driver assistance as the Q5, and passenger comfort is part of the same package. Each middle row seat can be individually reclined for comfort, while the rear seats are electronically operated for speed and convenience to work smoothly with the 7,700 litre boot at back.
