BARRHEAD CITED AS LEADING EXAMPLE OF REGENERATION SUCCESS T


he first ever World Town’s Leadership summit took place on 15 & 16 June in


Edinburgh. Experts from across the globe gathered to share best practice and start an international conversation about how town centres and can be improved and made more successful. Leaders from the US, South Africa, Canada, Europe and Scandinavia looked to Barrhead in East Renfrewshire as a blueprint for how to regenerate towns and urban areas in their country.


Barrhead won the accolade of


‘Scotland’s Most Improved Town Small/Medium Town’ at the 2015 SURF (Scotland’s Regeneration Network) awards. Barrhead’s £100m regeneration and long- term growth strategy rejuvenated and transformed the town centre, making it well-served with amenities, services and improved retail opportunities and a better place to live and do business.


And Barrhead’s successful regeneration was discussed as a perfect example of how a town centre can be revitalised and flourish.

small/medium town last year. It’s all about building a unique sense of identity for a


place and putting in the right leadership, governance and empowerment to improve the economies in small towns. This was all instigated in Barrhead, and the town itself, and Scotland, is being seen as a country at the forefront of how regeneration should be done.”


East Renfrewshire Council director of environment, Andy Cahill said: “Barrhead is seen as one of the leading examples of town centre regeneration in Scotland. It’s a testimony to what we have achieved here in Barrhead that the town’s revitalisation will help to inform the future of town centres the world over.”

he Premier Inn hotel at Lomondgate Services, a key gateway to Loch


Lomond & the Trossachs National Park, is to nearly double in size in response to overwhelming demand since its 2011 opening. The 60 bedroom hotel, which includes the Malt & Myre pub/restaurant, has been granted planning consent to add 54 rooms. In its planning application Premier Inn indicated that Lomondgate is one of the group’s best performing hotels in the region and is regularly full. The expanded hotel should be fully open during 2017.

With an estimated 15 million annual


vehicle movements on the adjacent A82 – and with easy access from both

carriageways via the Lomondgate Roundabout – the extended hotel will enhance an already impressive line-up of roadside services which includes; Scotland’s first Costa drive-thru, Euro Garages’ first new petrol filling station development north of the border and recently-opened, award-nominated diner, Jaconelli’s Fish. Cushman & Wakefield are marketing the remaining site at Lomondgate Services, which is one of the best commercial opportunities in Scotland for visitor-orientated development. Lomondgate Services is just one
