car test | Skoda Fabia

164g/km emissions contributes to responsible driving. And when we took our Superb Estate out on the open road we found it handles with more finesse than you might imagine of such a sizeable car. The steering is light, even in Sport mode, and is predictable and precise to instil confidence. There is a smooth power delivery, a maximum speed of 128 mph and a very respectable 0-62 acceleration of 10 seconds. The Skoda superb estate is available from £20.260 OTR The third-generation Skoda Fabia Estate also blends dynamic design features with outstanding practicality and is even larger than its bestselling predecessor. The whole Skoda range now has that family resemblance; crystalline shapes and sharp lines, which fuse to form a very characteristic Estate that’s larger and broader. And there are practical aspects to Skoda’s evolving design, it ensures efficiency and dynamism on the road. We enjoyed driving this well-balanced, sturdy car, which has tight proportions and an assertive road-stance. The grille and headlights appear optically stronger and with the powerfully contoured bonnet, and the Fabia looks wider without seeming off balance. The loading floor is now wider - coming in at 960mm. The passenger area is also wider and longer, and there’s more headroom for the driver and front seat passengers. If, like me, you’re over six feet tall, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the sense of space and comfort that this compact estate affords. The Skoda Fabia Estate's loading floor is wider now, too, making it even easier to pack up the boot's

530 litres of space - drop the rear seats and you've got a huge 1,395 litres of space, the largest in its class. The power unit on the SE L 1.4 TDI model which we tested has a top speed of 122 mph and return a very generous 67.3 mpg in the Extra Urban cycle. The fab Fabia Estate is available from £12,630 OTR. HOT SEATS

This month we review two superb SEATs, the Alhambra Connect 2.0 TDI Ecomotive and the Ibiza ST Estate. Let’s turn first to the imposing Alhambra, whose exterior style doesn’t mean its space has been compromised. Its dynamic design makes it one of those rare MPVs with a powerful, sporty presence. As we climbed inside, we were very impressed with the thoughtful and precise design and excellent

ergonomic features. In particular, the optional electric panoramic sunroof is three times larger

than a conventional sunroof, so everyone can enjoy the sunshine. It’s light and spacious and the interior is designed to be comfortable, practical and durable. On the outside the quality continues. Stylish alloy wheels enhance its good looks and they’re lighter than standard and a popular choice. The Alhambra is also a palace of

technological developments. The 2.0 TDI Ecomotive model which we tested comes equipped with Full Link technology to

connect a smartphone using Apple CarPlay TM, Android Auto TM or MirrorLink TM technologies, to make using a smartphone in the car safer, easier and more enjoyable than ever. Out on the road the SEAT Alhambra surprised and delighted us with its power and grace. It has a top speed of 126 mph, 250 Nm torque and a 0-62 acceleration of 9.9 seconds, which is great for such a large and comfortable diesel vehicle. We recommend you take a test drive, as we did, and discover more about the Alhambra, which is available from £24,885 OTR. We also tested the great-looking new

Ibiza Estate ST and greatly admired the alluring and distinctive sharp lines and fluid all-round design. With colour-coded dashboard, air vent surrounds and contrasting stitching on the steering wheel, gearshift and handbrake, the Ibiza exterior really is gorgeous. We particularly liked the fully integrated touchscreen infotainment system, which is top grade equipment and so easy to use. In the Ibiza ST Estate model which we tested, you also benefit from a great deal of extra space and there’s a slick fitting boot tray which protects the loading area from dirt and liquids. We feel this car is great for a dynamic small business like ours, as well as for a growing family, because of

thoughtful touches like the load separation grille, which helps everything stay in its rightful place, protecting both passengers and cargo. So you can take even the tightest turns knowing your things will stay in place. Talking of which, the compact and very quiet 1000cc engine drives this car smoothly and efficiently, especially in cornering. There’s a top speed of 107 mph and lots of torque in the lower gears, pulling 95 Nm at 3000 revs. And it meagre on CO2 emissions at just 120g/km and returns up to 76.3 mpg in the combined cycle.
