ENERGY SAVING EQUIPMENT

Kenfield has been working on a new generation of insulated, flexible, energy-efficient secondary doors. In 2013 we began trialling the Kenfield K750 Insulated Energy Door with Sainsbury’s and Tesco and the results have been impressive, with proven savings in energy costs, workplace efficiencies, ease of use, maintenance and longer life.

Our uniquely designed and patented K750 door was launched that year and since then, thousands have been fitted in cold stores, chillers and freezers across the UK for other major supermarkets, with Asda, Morrisons, Marks & Spencer and Aldi joining our list of customers. When a cold store or freezer is built from new or upgraded, the refrigeration system is the key element for the designer. But to ensure that the customer gets full value from the installation, consideration should be given at this stage to installing secondary doors. At Kenfield we work closely with system designers and architects to ensure that energy efficiencies and the requirements of the building regulations are met in full.

A major benefit of installing secondary doors is that outer doors can be left open to allow people and vehicles to move in and out of the

food storage area. Light, PVC-covered secondary doors have no sharp surfaces and can be pushed through with ease. They close automatically behind them and won’t be damaged when staff brush through. They also ensure that temperatures inside the freezer or cold store are maintained at an optimum level. Fitting insulated strip door curtains can also save energy in a busy cold store or freezer, as they also help to regulate temperatures in the working environment. It’s less noisy too. Outer doors have alarm systems fitted to monitor their use remotely. Once secondary doors have been fitted, and the temperature inside the cold area is maintained at a constant level, the alarms will sound on a less frequent basis.

Secondary doors can help prevent snowing. This happens when there is a build-up of warm air in a cold room, leading to condensation on the ceiling which then drops down as snow. The downside of this is that it can lead to icing on the floor which can cause accidents for staff and is particularly dangerous if heavy trolleys are being employed.

Health and safety is another important element to consider. A door propped open can lead to trip hazards, and no one wants to explain to a health

and safety inspector how it may have led to an accident. Our secondary doors don’t tangle or attach themselves to passing trolleys containing foodstuffs. These light, high visibility doors have flexible panels which allow them to bend around corners and provide staff on the move with peace of mind.

Where food is the main product, hygiene is a key health and safety issue. Wipe-clean secondary doors are perfect for foodstuffs to pass through. A chiller or a freezer can be a busy place with people and trolleys passing through hundreds of times a day. Knocks and bangs are a normal part of this and our secondary doors are built with robust materials to withstand this normal wear and tear.

Cold store, supermarket and warehouse managers will soon recognise the difference that installing secondary doors can make to their energy bills. Some of our customers have reported savings in the region of 20-25%. For the installer, the system designer and the architect, secondary doors should be a must on their checklist when they are planning a new system, updating existing plant or looking to make efficiencies. If they are not included, your customer is missing out on bottom line savings.
