IN THE HOT SEAT The largest range of high quality air conditioning systems
through now which are all those things. It pushes away the lazy approach which develops energy efficiency with no regard to cost or lifecycle. It stops the people who think the answer to making a unit do more is just to make it bigger. Instead, we are looking at what we need to achieve, how we do it in a cost effective, sustainable, recyclable way, and tick all the boxes. It forces people to try harder.
Is legislation doing the right things?
I think the Ecodesign Directive is the right way forward; it’s absolutely needed. Is it being
done well? No, It’s taking far too long and that’s a challenge. What I’m seeing in the industry now is that some manufacturers think they’ll just keep doing things the way they’re doing it. They bring in cheap refrigeration that isn’t efficient or anything else, because there’s a market for it – it’s all about cost. Then there are other manufacturers, such us ourselves, that are gearing towards the Ecodesign Directive ahead of time.
What you end up with then is this wide range of refrigeration in the industry that is just confusing. Any retailer, whether he’s an independent or a multiple, wants to see benchmarks for literature, or technical data, or the ECA list – something to measure everything against. At the moment, because of any lack of drive to get this through, how do people compare?
How could we get new people into industry?
With retailers continuing to focus on driving down costs and margins down, it becomes difficult to recruit good people into the industry. Multiple retailers could sponsor people, bringing talent into the industry and potentially giving those guys an insight into their world. That way, the talent comes through with an understanding of what the customer’s needs are through experience. If retailers want to get what they want out of this industry, perhaps they need to get involved a bit more than they are currently.
What advice would you give to young people?
Whatever role you want to have in this industry, you can’t beat experience.
Sport?
Cycling. It gives me good head space, good fitness and good distraction from the day job.
