On the road to R32
Hawco is proudly sponsoring the Apprentice of the Year Award at the ACR News Awards this month for the eighth year running. The international distributor is also finalising its plans for The HVAC & Refrigeration Show, where its technical team will be answering questions about adopting R32.

ith all the recent talk about the F-Gas phase-down, you might expect that most UK contractors would already be choosing the latest R32 air conditioning systems instead of R410a. But, according to Hawco, most small and medium-sized contractors are not quite ready to make the switch.
The company has been asking its customers about their preparations for the new refrigerant. What they have found is that while awareness is high, this has not yet translated into action, with just one in five contractors saying they have completed a R32 installation to date.

Neil Cooper, contractor inside sales manager at Hawco, explains: “There are a number of reasons why some contractors may have not switched to R32. Some have questions about training, others are worried about the cost of new tools. “However, the biggest reason they give is that there is not enough choice in the market at the moment” continues Mr Cooper. “Some contractors simply want to wait for their favourite brands or models to become available in a R32 version. We expect this to change over the next few months with planned launches from Hitachi, LG and others.”

Hitachi adds new features
Hitachi was one of only a handful of companies launching R32 products in 2017, with a select range of wall-mounted units with capacities between 2kW and 5kW. The specification of the RAC units was identical to existing R410a models in terms of size, weight and performance. Crucially, the price was also the same. In February it will roll out a new range of single splits designed for light commercial applications, ideal for offices, restaurants, shops and data centres. These will be available in a choice of wall-mounted, ducted and cassette versions
