Apparently the last quarter of 2014 saw a rush in wagers which basically saved the overall budget of the online gambling industry and pushed it into a growth rather than a decline.


The relaxation of restrictions on in-play wagers in the last quarter of 2014 has boosted sports betting revenue by almost €23m.


Meanwhile online slots rose 27 percent to €147m whilst casino games online fell 10 percent to €110m. Online poker also fell for the third consecutive year by 20 percent to €178. Other sectors include bingo €27.1m, virtual betting €10m, horseracing €9.9m, skill games €9.3m and online lotteries €5.5m.


There are just over 144 licences issued for online gaming companies. Eight new operators came into the market in 2014 including four foreign operators, such as Bet365. Six of these eight are focusing on sports betting. The top 10 operators generate some 75 percent of income in the market.


Player profile for the Italian online gambler is male between 25 and 44 years and 57 percent of active players are dedicated to a single game.


There are 2.86 million active players online for a total of 5.88 million game accounts which is an average of 2.05 accounts for each player.

The aim is that operators can offer the same bets and markets available on .com platforms encouraging players to switch from unlicensed to licensed websites.


Italy’s online gambling market was described as flat during 2014 despite the addition of new sports betting options.


Betting in the online gambling market in Italy represents 23.9 percent of the overall national market’s GGR. Horse race betting accounts for 1.6 percent of this whilst sports betting has the other 22.3 percent.


It was said that total revenue for the online sector amounted to €728m in 2014 just a 0.4 percent increase from the year before. The government’s share rose one percent to €167m. Mobile wagering accounted for 14 percent of the total revenue (doubling its income).


Sports betting is one of the few sectors that is growing in the online market. Sports betting rose 11 percent to €214m mainly due to the 2014 FIFA World Cup plus the introduction of exchange betting and the ongoing expansion of other sports

The number of active players per month fell 4.4 percent to 640,000. In 2012 the number of active players was around 734,000 per month. Average spend per online player rose to €94 however 65 percent of players spend a maximum of €50 and over half spend up to €25.


Online games via smart phones and tablets rose to a GGR of €99m, a 103 percent increase on the previous year with an online market share of 13.7 percent. Smart phones saw 68 percent of this expenditure and 57 percent of this spending went on sports betting, 20 percent on skill games, 17 percent on casino games, three percent on bingo and three percent on other gaming.


The number of operators involved in the smart phone online sector increased from nine to 42 last year and they offered 176 apps for online games (26 percent for sports betting). Meanwhile 29 operators were developing for tablets offering 101 Apps (15 percent for sports betting).


The number of action game accounts for sports betting in 2014 was 453,000 with 391,000 users with 171,000 new accounts opened last year.


There are currently 144 licences for remote gambling channels. 8.5 million gaming accounts with over 3.5 million account holders and 87 platforms are authorised offering over 8,000 games.
