Stars A star is a very big ball of burning gas. Stars are not star shaped – they are spherical like a ball. Stars give off huge amounts of light and heat. They can be seen from millions of kilometres away because they are so bright. Stars can be different colours. The hottest stars are blue and the coolest stars are red. Our sun is a yellow star. Our sun is just one star among a very large group of stars called a galaxy.
