In your research you should address the following: The reason(s) that you chose this technology to research. The history of its development. Current uses of the technology. Its impact on science, society and the environment. The future benefits that this technology may provide. Don’t forget to include the sources of information that you used.
Present your findings in one of the following ways: 1. Prepare a written report on your research. (The smartphone case study on page 355 is an example of a report on a technology.)
2. Summarise your findings on an A3 poster. 3. Prepare a three-minute presentation on your topic to give to your class OR record a two- minute video that outlines the importance of this technology.
Nature of Science
In this chapter we looked at areas where technology has been used to provide solutions to problems faced by society. Scientists often use technology when carrying out experiments and analysing data. Questions 1. Identify two ways that scientists use smartphones in their work. 2. Burning fossil fuels produces large quantities of carbon dioxide, for example in engines. Briefly describe three ways in which technology is helping to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions from cars and buses, etc.
Chapter Summary
1. Technology is the use of scientific knowledge to provide solutions to practical problems.
2. Technology is used in all aspects of our lives – food production, transport, energy production, energy use, communication, medicine and leisure.
3. Technology is being used to help us to live more sustainably. 4. Nanoscience and nanotechnology is the study and use of matter on extremely small scales.
