The Nature of Science Properties of metallic elements and compounds Conduct electricity
Sonorous (make a deep ringing sound)
Strong (titanium replacement hip joint)
Shiny
Properties of
Metals
Many corrode (react with oxygen in the air)
Solid at room temperature
Conduct heat
Ductile (can be stretched into wires)
Malleable (can be beaten into sheets)
Not all metals display all of these properties. For example, mercury is a liquid at room temperature and silver needs to be polished for it to appear shiny. But generally, the properties listed above can be used to distinguish between metals and non-metals.
