Smartphones and the environment The mining of minerals used in smartphones directly affects the environment and can have serious societal effects. Mining changes the landscape, and uses and releases substances that can pollute air, soil and water. Many countries have strict rules for mining practices. However some of the minerals used in smartphones are found in countries where there is conflict. This causes instability and danger for communities in these areas.
Managing the impacts of smartphones Smartphone producers, consumers and users all have a role in managing the
impacts of smartphones. Organisations such as The Enough
Project work to raise awareness of the conflict minerals that are found in smartphones and to reduce the amount of conflict minerals that are used by manufacturers.
Mobile phone companies can take initiatives to reduce the impact of their business on the environment. In 2010 Vodafone launched the Green Agenda to reduce CO2
emissions across all aspects of their business.
Consumers can shop carefully and choose phones that will not need to be replaced so often. They can also make sure to recycle their mobile phones so that the metals and other components can be reused.
Science in Society In pairs prepare a short presentation on 3D printing. Your presentation should
include the following:
1. The materials used by 3D printers to make objects. 2. At least five examples of objects that have been made using 3D printers. 3. Three ways that scientists believe 3D printing could be used in medicine.
