We are surrounded by mixtures and solutions. If we understand how they are formed and how we can separate them we can manipulate materials to meet our needs.
A mixture is made of two or more different particles mingled together. These particles can be atoms or molecules. This chapter looks at mixtures more closely and explains how they can be separated into the particles that make them up.

1. Salt in water
2. Sand in water
3. Sugar in water
4. Mud in water
5. Copper sulfate in water
6. Coffee in water
7. Gravel in water
The photographs above show mixtures of solids and liquids. In some of them the solid is dissolved in the liquid. Can you identify which ones have dissolved solids? How did you reach your conclusions?
