Technology in energy use The amount of energy we are using for transport, electricity and communication is increasing. Technology allows energy to be used more efficiently. Examples of technology in energy use include: Light emitting diodes (LEDs) use less power than traditional bulbs and are now used in torches and car lights. Washing machines and dishwashers now use less water and can clean dishes and clothes at lower temperatures. Cars that can run on both fuel and battery power consume less fuel. New technologies are being developed to produce electricity using renewable sources. New materials and building methods are making homes more energy efficient which helps to reduce our carbon footprint.

Technology in communication Communication takes many forms, from spoken to written to digital. Examples of technology in communication include: Machines are used to sort post in postal sorting offices. The internet has become a very important tool for communication. Computers, tablets and smartphones use complex technologies to store, process and send information. Phone, television and internet signals use fibre optic cables and satellites to send information over long distances. Computers have changed from large, bulky machines to portable, hand-held devices.
