And the Ret is History... Marvin Manring, Historian
And the Rest
is...Music History
Your Executive Board and Advisory Council look forward to another terrific conference and workshop this January. MMEA has met at Tan-Tar-A for the last 40 years—over half the life of the organization that came together in the early winter of 1937. Are you part of the membership who has been present for every year’s Conference at the resort? I’d be delighted to hear from you, especially about your first impression of the big move in the late 1970s, and the changes that have taken place over the decades.
Each year we set aside the Hawthorn Room for display of the Association’s archives during Thursday and Friday. Take a few moments and stop by on your way from the Crystal Ballroom to the Salons to check out conference programs from the early years of the MMEA. It’s a great look into the development of music education in our state and the growth of our affiliate organizations. Performances of last year’s honor groups will be available for viewing as well.
Have you taught 25 years or more? MMEA provides a recognition opportunity to honor your career in music education with the 25-Year Service Award. Visit the MMEA website’s awards page (http://
mmea.net/mmea-award-nomination-forms/) to submit your information. Service Award recipients will be recognized in Salon A on the Thursday evening (January 26) session at 7:45 p.m. If you have a cherished colleague—maybe someone who entered the profession with you many years ago, or a mentor—who hasn’t been recognized with this honor, we invite you to team up and celebrate together!
Do you have information about MMEA founder Clarence Best? If you do, please stop by the Hawthorn Room during the January conference, and share information about him with me.

Pam Smith Kelley has been working on a biography of her father, Claude T. Smith. As of this writing, the manuscript has not yet gone to press and a publication date is not set. More information will be available at the Hawthorn Room this January.
Speaking of
C.T.Smith...won’t you take a few moments and offer your support to “Put Claude in the Hall” of Famous Missourians? Music educators throughout Missouri and beyond are invited to voice support for Claude’s enshrinement into this prestigious group. Send an email to the office of the Speaker of the Missouri House of Representatives, and copy your state representative. Advocate to the parents of your music students (and your students, as well) with a performance of one of Claude’s works. Grass-roots support from those who knew him best, or know him now through his terrific concert pieces, will make all the difference.
